⛓Is end-to-end encryption really that important?

👨‍🏫End-to-end encryption has become one of the most frequently mentioned features of any messenger or Internet service in recent years. And since encryption has turned into a marketing feature, it is quite logical to ask the question “Is end-to-end encryption really important?”.

👥The reason why end-to-end encryption is absolutely necessary these days lies on the surface-without it, all your correspondence and all your contacts are freely available to cybercriminals, corporations and governments. And they can use this information in a variety of ways, and you won’t like any of them.

🛡At the same time, encryption provides sufficient protection: criminals usually do not have the resources to decrypt random messages (provided that a strong encryption algorithm is used), and governments cannot use automatic filters. This is the reason for the recent wave crack-downs by the authorities of different countries directed against messengers that have some encryption. Just look at the conflict between Telegram and the Russian government.

🕵️‍♂️However, the encryption itself does not guarantee anything. A centralized service can tell you that it doesn’t have access to user correspondence and encryption keys but you can’t verify this. And the service can transfer these keys to the authorities, or simply sell them, making good money on users. Moreover, the latter may simply be the initiative of one unscrupulous employee, and not the company as a whole. So end-to-end encryption must necessarily be complemented by full decentralization of the messenger, as implemented in Utopia.
